What makes us who we are? And what turns a place into a home? ‘Windland’ is a photography project, a documentary homage to my homeland, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and its people. A quiet, photographic record of what defines this land: its people, its places, and the countless untold stories in between.
In a collage of portraits and landscapes, people and land meet as equals, revealing how the land shapes the people through its vast horizons, its wind and water, and how the people, in turn, inscribe themselves upon it, leaving an imprint, a signature, a face. A constant exchange of shaping and being shaped, caught in light and time.
Over the course of the project, around fifty people are portrayed alongside their stories, in a documentary style that captures the ordinary moments and movements of everyday life in their familiar surroundings. They come from the most varied walks of life and lines of work: farmers, inland and Baltic Sea fishermen, craftspeople from every trade, police officers and firefighters, cultural workers and artists, teachers and educators, doctors and nurses, pastors, and many more.
This project is underpinned by questions that transcend the individual images: what identity and home mean in the northeast of Germany, how rural change and the passing of generations reshape the region, what it means to live caught between staying and leaving, and how culture, craft, and inherited ways of life might be preserved.

Falk Tischendorf is a German photographer. Alongside his career as a lawyer and international arbitrator, he is deeply committed to nature and wildlife conservation, as well as the social challenges confronting society. Born in Schwerin, the capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northeastern Germany, he is pursuing an MA in Professional Photography at Oxford Brookes University.
In his ongoing independent long-term project, “Windland: People Between Land and Sea”, he focuses on his native Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and portrays the people living there. His work explores questions of home, identity and belonging, of rural change and shifting generations, of lives lived between staying and leaving, and of preserving culture, craft, and inherited ways of life.
Through expressive portraits that offer the viewer an intimate understanding of the worlds they depict, his photographs disclose facets of the people themselves and their everyday world, opening up both familiar and intimate insights of the lives of people who call Mecklenburg-Vorpommern their home. Respect and mutual appreciation are the essential underlying foundations of these portraits engendering images that are frequently dependent on close and intensive collaboration.
